Meet the Herd

No two are quite the same.
Each member of the By Hand & Heart herd is individually shaped by hand, slowly dried, glazed and finished with their own little quirks and character.

Meet a few of the personalities you might find wandering through the herd.

The Founding Herd

Where It All Began

Every herd has a beginning, and these were ours. Meet Mack, Skye and Heather — three of the original Highland characters who helped bring By Hand & Heart to life. From those first experiments with clay to the growing herd of individual personalities you see today, each little cow has been part of a journey of creativity, discovery and a whole lot of heart. They may be the founding members, but their legacy lives on in every new addition to the herd.

Mack

Mack loves stormy skies, warm fires and a good spot to site and take it all in. Calm and thougthful; the sort of herd member who makes a place feel settled.

Skye

Bright, breezy and full of Highland spirit. Loves wide open spaces, fresh air and anywhere that feels a little bit wild and free.

Heather

Loves sunny windowsills, wildflowers and watching the fields. Happiest somewhere warm with a good view and absolutely no reason to hurry.

New herd members in the making...

There are always a few new personalities taking shape behind the scenes. Each one is formed by hand, then slowly dried before heading off for their first firing.

Who they'll become is still anyone's guess.

A Sneak Peek at the Herd

The herd is growing, and each new arrival has a personality all of their own!

Lovingly handmade in New Zealand, no two Highland cows are ever quite alike.

From cheeky expressions to wild fringes and magnificent horns, every herd member has their own little quirks. Here's a sneak peek at some of the characters getting ready for the Hororata Highland Games on 7 November 2026.

Bracken - Herd Member #23

Deep in the woodland, where moss carpets the ground and tiny red toadstools peek through the undergrowth, you'll find Bracken. A curious little Highland cow with a love for quiet forest corners and all things wild and wonderful. With a coat inspired by the woodland floor and a touch of magic about her, Bracken brings a little piece of the forest wherever she goes.
